The American Dream

Everyone of us is chasing after the American Dream.   People from other countries want to come to America, so they too can experience the American Dream.  They believe that there’s promises of unending riches awaiting them when they get here.  We all want to be financially secure and never have to worry about a thing.   We believe that money will solve ALL our problems.  We earn more money, but still desire more.   It never seems to be enough!

In addition, we’re always looking for the get rich quick scheme.

Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.-Proverbs 13:11

If we’re honest, everyone of us asks the question, “Why are they so successful?”  From the outside looking in, it seems like the rich people are so happy!  As the verse above states, it’s only by hard work that we generate wealth.

God’s word however, teaches us a totally different principle.

Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper.-Proverbs 13:4

Work hard and become a leader; be lazy and become a slave.-Proverbs 12:24

I have riches an honor as well as enduring wealth and justice.  My gifts are better than gold, even the purest gold, my wages better than sterling silver!  Those who love me inherit wealth.  I will fill their treasuries.-Proverbs 8:18-19, 21

How often in your life have you looked to God for your provisions?  If you’re like most probably not often.  Throughout the Bible, we see and learn that the things we chase after here, will only leave us in despair.

Joyful are those who listen to me, watching for me daily at my gates, waiting for me outside my home!  For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the Lord.  But those who miss me injure themselves.  All who hate me love death.-Proverbs 8:34-36

Do all things unto the Lord

What’s one thing you can do right now, that will have a HUGE effect on your day?

Your perspective on things , has a lot to do with how your day plays out.  Some people dread going to work and can’t stand where, or who they work for.  If that’s you, keep reading….

The Bible has a lot to say, when it comes to work.

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than people. -Colossians 3:23

Wow!  That kind of puts a new perspective on things, doesn’t it?  Think about how many things we do, during the course of our day.  Now, think what it would be like if we did those same things, as if we were working for the Lord.  Mundane, menial and trivial tasks, take on a whole new meaning.

When I read this verse, my mind immediately went to my job.  The key word in this scripture is the word “whatever”.  That means anything that we set our mind to do.  That could be mowing the lawn, taking out the trash, dealing with an upset customer, etc.

Think about it from your employer’s point of view.   If you adopt this one little strategy at work, your employer will definitely take notice.   Who knows where that might take you. There could be a promotion for you, right around the corner!

What’s the one thing that you despise the most about your job?  The next time you do it, reflect on this verse.  I promise that you’ll have a new perspective!   There’s definitely a paradigm shift, when you consider it this way, isn’t there?

Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. -Galatians 6:4
